Deborah Leigh-Russell Deborah is the Creator of ‘SOUL My Story - My Journey I was born in Sydney and grew up in the Sutherland Shire, with the beaches of Cronulla within easy distance of my home. My uncle Graham used to sing with his guitar and banjo, and I have never forgotten what it felt like at the age of four to share the microphone with him in one of his fun practice sessions at Grandma's place in Jannali. Growing up in my immediate family that didn't even have a radio, I used to create my own music by singing and making up songs. Television and the movie musicals on a Saturday nurtured my connection to a world to which I felt I belonged. My Grandma did have a pianola, and the thrill of 'mucking about' with our Friday night family get-together and sing along is one of my fondest memories. The creation and vision of Four Seasons Soiree's is definitely linked to these intimate fun-loving family occasions. These were happy times and music and song always created an inner feeling of magic. The sharing of this is what makes life so special. There was never any money for private music lessons, and being in a Catholic school, music was only offered to those who had private lessons. I remember singing in a general music class in early high school and being asked to come and sing in front of the class. My whole body shook and shivered, including my cheeks and my top lip, and I remember everyone laughing. I wondered, 'How can I ever sing in front of people if this is how my body reacts?' But Mrs Jelfs encouraged me and taught me how to smile as I sang. She invited me to audition at the age of 14 for the Gunnamatta Bay Christmas by Candlelight. I was selected as a soloist, and was in total awe of the experience. The next year, at the age of 15, from knowing that I could still survive after performing in front of a crowd, I auditioned for the play, 'Androcles and the Lion', that our school was entering in the Genesian Theatre Arts Festival. This involved all of the Sydney metropolitan area. I played 'Lavinia' and was astounded to receive an 'Outstanding Performance Award'. There were only three individual awards presented out of all the performers of the seventeen plays that had gone into the finals. These two occasions set my heart on fire and kept me sane when, at the age of sixteen, my parents split and I went to live with my grandmother for a while. At this stage I met a boy whose mother happened to be a singing teacher, and she encouraged me by offering lessons here and there when I wasn't otherwise occupied. I married the boy fairly quickly, and other distractions entered my life, but singing, whether in church or in groups, kept me performing.. I was often asked to sing at various functions and fund-raising events. Family life took up a lot of energy and it wasn't until recent years that I have been able to throw myself into formal studies and education in the performing creative arts. Some unfortunate events entered my life again, that prevented me from singing for a while, and through ill health my doctor discovered I used to sing and suggested I start again. It still took a while to regain confidence and put fuel into the fire, but once I started I haven't been able to stop. No-one will let me, which is wonderful!!!! And now I can't stop because I have realised that this is who I am, and what I am about: 'Beautiful music creating exquisite experiences'. So, it has been a rather adventurous, exciting and healing journey, with many many beloved relationships and friendships supporting and inspiring me along the way. Thank you!
